Safety

The BMW XM has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Q6 e-tron Sportback doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XM has a standard Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Q6 e-tron Sportback doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the XM’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Q6 e-tron Sportback doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the XM and the Q6 e-tron Sportback have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The BMW XM weighs 657 to 789 pounds more than the Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

There are over 14 percent more BMW dealers than there are Audi dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the XM’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. With 73 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks BMW higher than Audi.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW above average in long-term dependability. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Audi is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 8 places higher in reliability than Audi.

Engine

The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 282 more horsepower (738 vs. 456) and 107 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 631) than the Q6 e-tron Sportback’s standard electric motors. The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 229 more horsepower (738 vs. 509) and 107 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 631) than the SQ6 e-tron’s standard electric motors.

Fuel Economy and Range

The XM Label’s maximum EPA estimated range on a full tank and a full charge is 339 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The Q6 e-tron Sportback’s range is only 285 to 325 miles, after which the minimum time to recharge is 21 minutes for only an 80% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge at a professionally installed 220-volt charging station can take up to 12 hours.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the XM’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Q6 e-tron Sportback:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the XM has larger tires than the Q6 e-tron Sportback (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. F:235/60R19 & R:255/55R19). The XM’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Q6 e-tron Sportback (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. F:255/50R20 & R:285/45R20).

The XM’s standard 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Q6 e-tron Sportback’s standard 60 series front and 55 series rear tires. The XM’s 275/35R23 front and 315/30R23 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the Q6 e-tron Sportback SQ6’s optional 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XM has standard 22-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the Q6 e-tron Sportback. The XM’s 23-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the Q6 e-tron Sportback SQ6.

Suspension and Handling

The XM has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Q6 e-tron Sportback doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The rear suspension of the XM uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Q6 e-tron Sportback, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The XM offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Audi doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Q6 e-tron Sportback.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XM’s wheelbase is 8.5 inches longer than on the Q6 e-tron Sportback (122.2 inches vs. 113.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XM is 2.3 inches wider in the front and 1.7 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Q6 e-tron Sportback.

Chassis

The front grille of the XM uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Q6 e-tron Sportback doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The XM has 2.8 inches more front headroom, .5 inches more front legroom, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1.8 inches more rear headroom, 2.9 inches more rear legroom and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the Q6 e-tron Sportback.

Cargo Capacity

The XM has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Q6 e-tron Sportback with its rear seat folded (64.3 vs. 52.9 cubic feet).

Towing

Standard Trailer Stabilization Control on the XM uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Q6 e-tron Sportback doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Q6 e-tron Sportback, the XM has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The XM has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Q6 e-tron Sportback.

The XM is equipped with both FM and AM stereo radios, offering access to more content and better coverage than the Q6 e-tron Sportback, which solely provides FM radio. With AM radio, you can enjoy a wider variety of stations featuring news, talk shows, sports commentary, native language programing, automated traffic guidance, and emergency broadcasts. AM waves travel further and penetrate buildings and obstacles more effectively than FM signals, especially at night. Having both FM and AM stereo radios the XM offers a more comprehensive listening experience compared to only FM in the Q6 e-tron Sportback.

HD Radio boasts several benefits over conventional radio: superior sound quality with clearer and consistent FM broadcasts, CD-quality audio, and Multicast Channels offering up to four streams from a single station, adding programming choices. Cars like the XM equipped with HD Radio provide an improved in-car entertainment experience. The Q6 e-tron Sportback, devoid of this technology, foregoes these benefits. Selecting the BMW XM empowers drivers to enjoy a more immersive and enjoyable listening experience while on the go.
